FMQ Challenge 2012: April tutorial by Don Linn

E Our task for April was to transfer a quilt pattern onto a quilt top using tulle fabric. I ´ve used this technique before (it could be that I´ve found it at Don´s website, it´s hard to say now) and it worked well. But at that time I was a hand quilter and now I´m trying to learn free-motion machine quilting. And the quilting was a failure. Of course it was my fault to take such a complex pattern, but I wanted to use this pattern in a quilt and I needed practice. So this is the result:

E It´s not a progress, it´s a regress. I simply could not stay in the lines, I didn´t see the lines behind the sewing foot and I tried NOT to turn the quilt sandwich (the right part of the photo). Then I gave up and started to turn it everytime I needed to, and the left part looks a little better. And the bad news is: to make this quilted motive  better I have to practise, practise and practise, but first I have to transfer much more repetitions of the pattern and it is really hard! Thanks Don´s method I have a tulle template already but it´s still too difficult for me who cannot draw a straight line.

  1. I think you are too hard on yourself. Love the design. Looks like it would take some patience!

  2. Thank you Ramona! and you are right, patience is the keyword. I´m preparing more practice sandwiches with the patter
